Over the past two decades, my career has taken me through diverse cultural landscapes, from the bustling streets of Asia to the vibrant heart of Latin America to the historically rich environments of Russia and Europe. With each move and each transition, I have faced the profound challenge and the unique opportunity of reinventing myself—both personally and professionally. This constant flux has often mirrored the deeper, internal odyssey shaped by an aspect of my personality as outlined in my BG5 Human Design—the open Identity & Direction function.
The Challenge of the Open Identity & Direction Function
Living with an open Identity & Direction center, I’ve often been adrift in a sea of uncertainty, frequently questioning my place in the world and true purpose. This aspect of my design has led to confusion about my role in my personal life and career. I’ve perpetually searched for direction, purpose, and a sense of belonging. There were times when I felt unloved or continuously sought love and validation from outside sources. The questions of “Who am I?” and “What is my life all about?” seemed to echo endlessly in the chambers of my soul, seeking answers.
This constant quest for identity and direction often left me feeling lost, as if I were perpetually searching for an anchor in the shifting sands of life’s vast desert. The shadow of my open Identity & Direction function manifested as a deep need for someone else to show me the way, to point me towards a path that felt aligned with a core I couldn’t quite define.
Discovering Wisdom in the Shadows
However, the journey through the shadows of this open center in BG5 has also been a path of profound discovery and wisdom. It has taught me that my sensitivity to environments is not a weakness but a powerful guide. This realization came gradually as I moved from country to country, culture to culture. Each location brought with it a new set of energies, some that felt discordant and unsettling and others that resonated deeply, enhancing my sense of self and purpose. I learned that if a place didn’t feel right, I had the power—and indeed, the imperative—to move.
Recognizing the right environment became a key to unlocking my potential. When I found places that felt right, everything else in my life started aligning. This alignment was not just geographical but emotional and spiritual. In the right place, I found peace and a natural flow that allowed me to thrive.
Moreover, understanding that my identity is fluid, changing from day to day and depending on whom I’m with, liberated me from the shackles of a fixed self-concept. This flexibility has enabled me to explore various roles in my life, adapting and learning from each new context and interaction. It has allowed me to mirror others, helping them find their direction and sense of love, reflecting their best selves back to them.
The Value of Openness
The wisdom of the open Identity & Direction function has taught me to value the transient, the variable, and the uncertain. It has shown me how to navigate the waters of change with agility and how to see the potential for transformation in every challenge. Most importantly, it has taught me to recognize and cherish what is truly of value in the myriad experiences of life.
As someone who has lived in 13 different countries and continuously shifted roles and environments, I have come to see that my many different roles are not a sign of a lost soul but a testament to a richly lived life. Each role has been a chapter in a larger, more complex story of growth and self-discovery.
For those who share this open Identity & Direction in their BG5 profile, or for anyone facing similar challenges of identity and belonging, remember that your environment and openness are not just challenges to be overcome but are sources of potential and gateways to deeper understanding. Embrace the journey, for in the right place and with the right people, everything can indeed be right for you.
